There are about 6 Million
carers in the UK, and of that there are at least 150,000
young carers, and there are definitely more that we
don’t know about! This might be because they may be
unaware that they are a carer, or they might be
embarrassed or even worried that if anyone finds out,
then they might be taken away…
Who is a Young
Carer?
A Young Carer is anyone who is under
18, who has extra responsibilities around the home because they
have to care for, or help care for someone (usually in
the family), who is affected by illness, disability, old
age or drug or alcohol misuse. Young Carers often have
to do things like housework, shopping, giving
medication, looking after a brother or sister, cooking
and many other things, which can make it hard to find
time to go and be with friends, to do homework or just
have fun like everyone else!
